Professor William W. Orrison, Jr., MD, MBA - Editor and Author

William W. Orrison, Jr., MD, MBA, is currently a practicing neuroradiologist in Nevada and Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of HealthHelp, Inc., Professor of Radiology at the University of Utah, and adjunct Professor of Psychology at Brigham Young University. Dr. Orrison served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine from 1996 until 2001, and he completed the Executive MBA program at the University of Utah in 2002. Dr. Orrison is a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine, completed neurology and radiology residencies at the University of Wisconsin, and Neuroradiology fellowships at the University of Wisconsin as well as Ulleval Hospital in Oslo, Norway. Following the completion of his training, he entered the United States Air Force and served as Chair of the Department of Radiology at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Following completion of his military obligation, Dr. Orrison served as the Director of the New Mexico Institute of Neuroimaging and Professor of Radiology, Associate Professor of Neurology, and Chief of the Division of Neuroradiology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and the New Mexico Regional Federal Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His primary focus as a clinician and researcher has been the development of advanced neuroimaging technologies as well as a special interest in radiation safety and quality. Dr. Orrison is the author of more than 150 medical publications and abstracts, six textbooks with translations in three languages as well as numerous book chapters and reviews. He holds radiology-related patents in three countries, and has several patents pending. He has served on the editorial review board of the American Journal of Neuroradiology, the International Journal of Neuroradiology, and Radiology. He has given over 300 presentations, nationally and internationally, primarily on topics in the field of radiology.

Michael D. Glinski - Associate Editor

 

Michael Glinski has nearly thirty years of diagnostic imaging experience, particularly in clinical education, customer service, and sales & marketing. By developing strong interdepartmental teamwork and through careful and creative communication, Mr. Glinski recently placed forty-six high-end diagnostic imaging installations in a territory new to his previous employer, Toshiba America Medical Systems -- garnering loyalty and repeat business in the process. As Vice President of Quality Assurance with HealthHelp, Inc., Mr. Glinski's high level of innovation and creativity helped establish HealthHelp’s nationwide service network. From 1987 to 1992, Mr. Glinski acted as product marketing manager and sales manager for Toshiba, in which position his focus on employee education, customer service, and strong internal and external communication helped Toshiba develop and introduce the world's first open MRI system. In the process of creating the new market segment that is now represented by every major medical equipment manufacturer, Mr. Glinski formed a close working relationship with editor and author Dr. Orrison. Their close collaboration has succeeded in consolidating a disparate collection of essential data into a useful informative resource for ordering physicians. As Executive Director of the Foundation for Radiology Educational Excellence, Mr. Glinski's instructional technology experience serves to focus, amplify and distribute the clinical expertise of the radiologists in the Foundation.

David C. Levin, MD - Coauthor

 

David C. Levin, M.D., Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Radiology at Jefferson Medical College and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, first became interested in medicine while serving as a jet fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force after graduating from Cornell University. He subsequently received his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, then did a surgical internship and radiology residency at the UCLA Medical Center. During the course of his career in academic radiology, he has held faculty appointments at the New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center in New York City, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, and Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard, he was head of cardiovascular/interventional radiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, before being appointed acting chairman of that department. He came to Jefferson as radiology chairman in 1986, and held that post for 16 years before stepping down at the end of June 2002.

Dr. Levin has served as chairman of the Council on Cardiovascular Radiology of the American Heart Association and president of the Society of Chairmen of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD). At the RSNA, he served as chair of the cardiovascular section of the Program Committee, head of the health policy and practice section of the Refresher Course Committee, and chair of the Committee on Health Policy and Practice. He was a member of several committees and commissions of the American College of Radiology. He has been an examiner on the American Board of Radiology oral exams and has been a member of the editorial boards of six radiology journals. In research, he has published 189 papers, 1 textbook, 21 book chapters, and 220 abstracts. He has given 392 presentations at national medical meetings or as an invited lecturer at other academic institutions. Among these are 15 named or other special lectures around the country and abroad. His research interests in the past have included the morphologic aspects of coronary artery stenosis, results of angioplasty and other percutaneous interventions in the treatment of vascular disease, and the diagnosis of cardiac and vascular diseases by angiography. More recently his research has focused upon economic issues in radiology, such as the utilization and costs of imaging procedures in our healthcare system, self-referral issues, and managing capitated radiology contracts. In 1981, he received the Herbert Stauffer Award of the Association of the University Radiologists (AUR) for the best published basic science research paper for a study dealing with vascular resistance changes in an experimental model of arterial stenosis.

Leonard Berliner, MD - Coauthor

 

Dr. Berliner brings nearly thirty years of medical experience to the Medical Imaging Consultant. Prior to contributing to the text, Dr. Berliner worked as medical director for Swissray International, in which position he acted as the scientific advisory committee chairman, participated in project research and development, advised management on sales and marketing issues, and educated employees on medical practice. Before joining Swissray International in 2000, Dr. Berliner spent his career as a clinician at Staten Island University Hospital and Seaview Radiology. Over his nineteen years at Staten Island University Hospital, Dr. Berliner served as the assistant director of radiology, the chief of vascular-interventional radiology, the chief of computed-body tomography, and as an attending radiologist. At Seaview Radiology, where he spent sixteen years, Dr. Berliner worked as a staff radiologist and assistant director. He received his medical degree at the State University of New York's Downstate Medical Center and performed residencies and a fellowship at New York University Medical Center.

Valarie Borow, MD, CPC - Coauthor

 

Valarie Borow, MD, CPCDr. Borow has nearly twenty years of experience in training medical coding teams responsible for billing services. At Per-Se Technologies, she educated physicians on documentation standards, compliance issues, coding guidelines, and major risk elements and implemented employee-training courses mandated for all procedural coders for the company’s central U.S. operations. In addition, she audited to ensure accuracy and compliance with federally mandated regulations. Dr. Borow obtained national accreditation as a certified professional coder through the American Academy of Professional Coders in 1998.

Edgar Clark, MD, MHA - Coauthor

 

Dr. Clark brings twenty-five years of clinical experience to the Medical Imaging Consultant. Prior to contributing to the book, Dr. Clark worked for Body Imaging Radiology in Portland, Oregon. He was staff radiologist at the center from 2000 through 2002 and he was the center's manager and medical director from 1998 to 2000. In the latter position, Dr. Clark rebuilt the center's staff, increased revenues by 50 percent in one year, and developed a strategic plan and strategic partners to expand the clinic's imaging capabilities and increase its business. Previous to his work with Body Imaging Radiology, Dr. Clark was the medical director for Outpatient Radiology Center in Portland, Oregon, where he led the center's business from its inception. In addition, Dr. Clark was the director of radiology for the Metropolitan Clinic in Portland, Oregon, from 1993 to 1999. In this position, he performed strategic analysis and developed and analyzed projects in utilization management and quality assurance. Dr. Clark received his MD from the University of California School of Medicine and his B.S. from Stanford University.

Neil Grossman, MD - Coauthor

 

Dr. Grossman brings nearly twenty years of medical experience to the Medical Imaging Consultant, including over five years of experience in radiology benefits management  Dr. Grossman concurrently held the positions of president of MetroWest Radiology Associates, medical director for NorthEast Imaging, and medical director of Imaging Associates, all in Framingham, Massachusetts. Dr. Grossman received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts, completed his radiology residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and acted as a clinical fellow for Harvard Medical School from 1979 through 1983, after which he was a clinical instructor in radiology for the Boston University School of Medicine. From 1982 to 1983, he held a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In 1995, he achieved CAQ in vascular and interventional radiology. Dr. Grossman is a member of the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, the New England Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, the American College of Radiology, and the Radiological Society of North America.

David A. Tripp, PhD, DABR - Coauthor

 

Dr. Tripp is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Radiology Department at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center in Salt Lake City, UT, and has held a joint appointment on the Hospital Staff and the University’s School of Medicine for 10 years. He received his Ph.D. in Physics at Utah State University, and is American Board of Radiology certified in Diagnostic Radiologic Physics. Dr. Tripp has practiced in the field of Medical Physics for 25 years in either a hospital setting or as a consultant. His primary focus has been in radiation dosimetry.

Karen S. Langley, MS - Coauthor

 

Karen Langley received her M.S. in Radiological Health Physics at San Diego State University, San Diego, California. She is currently the Director of the Radiological Health Department and Radiation Safety Officer for University of Utah. She has over 20 years in the field of radiation safety with a variety of experience including 8 years as the hospital health physicist for the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, Radiation Safety Officer at the University of California, Los Angeles and the Radiation Controls Manager at the Test Reactor Area at the INEEL. Karen is active in the Health Physics Society serving as an officer in her local chapters, committee of several committees at the national level for the Health Physics Society and is a new member of the Board of Directors. She is also currently a member of the Radiation Control Board for the Utah Division of Radiation Control.
